OUR BEGINNINGS
My passion for animals of all breeds, shapes and sizes began at the age of four in 1974 when I visited my Uncle’s dairy farm in NSW. Experiencing being around creatures that I hadn’t seen before fascinated me, and l’ve loved them ever since and even more so now that I do pet care full time.
Fast forward to now, in early 2019 I took a leap of faith and started training and studying to make a significant change from being a Manager where I had worked for over 20 years. Servicing tradies for over 20 years, I met plenty of great doggos and as each year went by I wanted to switch careers and follow my heart to work with animals.
ANIMAL STUDIES
I have studied Animal Studies Certificate II at Ultimo TAFE. Dog Training and Behaviour plus Handle and Assess Danderous Dogs with Steve and Vicki Austin, two of Australia’s most highly regarded Dog Trainers and Handlers. Combining these courses has given me the necessary skills to provide expert care and advanced training to teach your dog new and exciting skills, which aid in making your dog the best they can be to enhance and enrich your lives together. During my career transition I have immersed myself in every aspect of animal care available to me. I have great access to many amazing people who have dedicated large portions of their lives for the betterment of dogs and cats lives.
VOLUNTEER WORK
I have 750+ volunteer hours with Sydney Dogs and Cats Home at their previous Carlton site and was employed as their Maintenance and Logistics Officer at their Strathfield and Austral sites for approximately 15 months. My duties included: Transport of animals between our facilities, our adoption partners Petstock and transport of pets between SDCH and foster carers/adopters. I was also responsible for repairs and maintenance across the Strathfield and Austral sites, constructed kennels at our Austral site, repaired any damages caused by the dog and cat residents and maintained the grounds and gardens at both sites. As a volunteer I would set up day kennels by providing water and comfortable bedding and toys for enrichment, clean night kennels by removing animal waste, scrub and disinfect kennel, provide water and clean enclosures andclean and disinfect cat and dog bowls. We also wash and dry laundry, walk, train and provide enrichment and stimulation for the animals.
VET CLINIC
I have also spent approximately 9 months as a volunteer with my local veterinary clinic, West Ryde Vets, my duties included, cleaning and disinfection of cattery, clean and disinfect holding cages, wash and dry laundry, clean surgical equipment and assist Vets during consultations and procedures.
I have adopted two amazing dogs from Sydney Dogs and Cats Home, Toby who is a 4.5 year old Pointer x Great Dane and Dudley who is a 2.5 year old Bull Arab x Great Dane. Both are very dog social, Toby is the more confident of the pair however he is a great big brother. They have been together for a little over two years. They’re very active and enjoy lots of walking, swimming, enrichment activities such as balls, frisbees, rope and tug-toys, and chasies at the dog-park.
CAT CARE
I have also had four wonderful cats over the last 20 years; Coco (13 now passed), Kody (13 now passed) BeeGee (13) and Butter (6). Coco, Kody and Butter have had considerable health issues which have provided me vital skills providing medication and specific health-related diets. Coco unfortunateley developred acute kidney-disease, Kody was diabetic from age 8 -13. Butter was diabetic when I adopted him last year. I currently provide Butter insulin, twice-daily via subcutaneous injecttion in cnjunction with a calorie-controlled diet. BeeGee is very healthy, with kitten-like energy. BeeGee and Butter are besties. They were intergrated very quickly as they were a perfect match of curiosity and energy, their friendship started after just two days together and grows stronger every day.
I have gained valuable experience working with Dogs and Cats of all breeds, temperaments, ages and physical condition. Working, handling and training dogs and cats in a shelter environment has expanded my skill set and enlightened me as to why dogs arrive at shelters and often spend considerable parts of their lives in limbo. I use positive rewards-based training, rewards include high-value treats, high-value toys and activities tailored to your dog’s preferances.
